Five Questions for Authentic Leadership
How do you lead a growing organization if you are not growing and developing as a leader?
Coaching will provide you with valuable tools needed to lead and work with a team.
Ambitious executives don't only need to understand what makes others tick; they need to recognize what is going on in their own personalities.
Coaching strengthens emotional intelligence and gives leaders the ability to recognize how other people are feeling in a business context and to react appropriately for mutual benefit. Consider some of these key thoughts from research on executive coaching.
- A Stanford B-School executive coaching survey reveals how a "CEOs ability to motivate and inspire can make a significant difference in his or her overall effectiveness.”
- McKinsey research indicates that "people and corporate culture are the most important drivers of innovation."
- "A recent global survey of coaching clients by PwC and the Association Resource center concluded that the mean ROI for companies investing in coaching was seven times the initial investment, with over a quarter reporting an ROI of 10 to 49 times." - Matt Symonds, contributor to Forbes
- “Self-awareness and the growth it supports .... can and should be the heart of executive coaching and leadership programs.” – Douglas LaBier, Ph.D., director of the Center for Progressive Development in Washington, D.C.
I coached a founder who went from dreading certain conversations to loving them. I coached a CEO who learned how to motivate his team and hold them accountable to a shared goal. In both cases, we worked together to identify their values and what is important to them. Through a deeper understanding of themselves and the perspectives they hold, they became more aware of what is possible when they focus on interactions that resonate with them and understand the perspectives of those with whom they are interacting. In both cases, they were able to experience progress by understanding how to commit to their authentic selves.
We are all growing and learning all the time and those lessons are most valuable when we can identify the shift that takes us to a new level of understanding.
Want to start leading from your authentic self? Answer these questions:
1. What values are most important to you?
2. If time and resources were not a concern how would you spend your time?
3. What qualities would you want your team to use to describe you?
4. What are your daily habits?
5. When do you acknowledge and appreciate the contributions from others?
Being aware of your ambitions, your values, and your leadership style are just the starting point. Using that awareness to set your intentions, be present, serve others, and listen to your intuition will help you lead with authenticity and gain effectiveness.
